i got an a820 and recorded a band practice on it thru a dda amr 24 (36 in, 24 buss). this was a real plug n play wth some 57's and other mics in that price range. damn fine sound for a half-baked run thru. can't wait to really put the time into a real session.
recorded an album on one in chicago years ago, and damn it sounded great.
among studer fans, the a800 sounds the best. a820 gets really high praises for its totally modular construction and the led meters give more precise readings.

this is one COOLtape recorder!

Well it is very advanced, it is completely digital in control. and it had a separate doby A B C unit...
and is ridiculously heavey.

Well, guess what. I have it! Joy! :D Now I gotta start digging eBay for that controller.
MANY THANKS for taking the time to share your knowledge baz.....

I just repaired a studer B67, very nice machines, but i like otari professional machines more.

I like the Otari MX-55 though the tape transport electronics are not as clever as this machine, sounds great though!

well you never had a otari MTR-15
i think it the most advanced machine ever.
But i can repair studer/revox much faster than a complicated otari.

Just Googled the machine, wow, the MTR-15 looks great! wonder how it compares to a Studer A820, that's a machine I really want.
