Billy Bragg performs "Waiting for the Great Leap Forward" on a "Late Night" talk show and talks to some unknown host in the late eighties. I wonder what ever happened to him?

  • Much as I love the bloke, it's a shame he's still carrying the torch without much support from young singers. 30 years ago he was my generation's Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan or Joe Strummer, trouble is that he still is!! Where are the politically aware 18 year old singers? Where is the new Billy Bragg?

  • 23 years later and still relevant

  • I've been trying to get into Frank Turner since seeing your comments, but I just don't think he even comes close to Billy Bragg. Although his heart is clearly in the right place, there's just no beautiful poetry or much grace in it. I would really like to get behind him but can't get over how bland and mediocre he is.

  • @noscones Thanks. Since posting this I have discovered Frank Turner. Thanks for the head's up.

  • @obugger his name is frank turner. check him out.

  • @obugger I think you just have to look a little around a bit mate. Frank Turner and Dizraeli is a good place to start, they're not exactly 18 but then again neither was Billy Bragg at the height of his fame, or Woody Guthrie or Joe strummer. I spose Bob Dylan is quite exceptional in how young he was at the start, but who says you need to be young? Bragg did a stand up job at the protests this year, I don't think someone younger would have necessarily turned more young heads

  • I just....kinda wish we didn't all get older.

  • he's still singing/about the 1&,jobless homeless,etc. burn down the U KNOW WHO!

  • @Thenowhereman42 Thanks for the tip, I'll check him out.

  • @obugger The new Billy Bragg is a man called Erik Petersen, he sometimes goes by Mischief Brew. He's in the same sort of scene as Defiance, Ohio. He is a hell of a lot better though. I actually really like Defiance, Ohio. But Erik Petersen is miles and miles better. He's my new Dylan for sure.

  • @HipHopRevolutionary Thank you for the tip, I'll check them out. Tom Morello and Rage Against the Machine I know already of course.

  • @obugger all in hiding. Or shunned by contemporary pop music for being "too honest".
