This was recorded at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 14, 1989 during the "IN THE SPIRIT OF THINGS" tour. It wasn't released until 1998,however. In 2000 it was re-released,this time with the title KANSAS--EXTENDED VERSIONS. It was released yet again in 2003 as KANSAS--GREATEST HITS LIVE. I think another version or two might also be out there!!

This was Kansas' 3rd live album and 19th overall. The song was written by Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren. Kerry Livgren remembers writing the song on his father's Lowry organ,"It had this one setting that sounded like a big pipe organ and the sound caused me to write in a little different vein than I might have with a guitar or a piano.'The Wall' lyrically, represented maybe better than any song I'd written at that time, my personal spiritual longing to find an answer to life and who we are and why we're here. I felt like I was up against this invisible, impenetrable wall that wouldn't let me get any further!"

Steve Walsh - Lead Vocals, Keys
Steve Morse - Guitars
Billy Greer - Bass, Vocals
Rich Williams - Guitar
Phil Ehart - Drums
Greg Roberts - Keys

  • Dosent sound right without a violin :(

  • You are one tough customer Francesco!

  • @rickyon Both Robby and David made me love that instrument :) The violin is probably one of the most underrated instrument in Rock. I'm not exactly knocking this version of The Wall (Steve just NAILS the high tenor at 2:46). It sounds good especially with Greg Robert on keys. Greg is an excellent pianist and he played The Wall and Song For America very well. I wonder what he's up to today? Incidentally, Do you have any audio from the Freaks of Nature tour era?

  • I may be getting some video from that tour soon! There are bootlegs from the FON tour available.

  • Great music! I love "The Wall"--it's one of my favorite songs of all time. I remember the Leftoverture tour in the late '70s--the first time I had seen Kansas in concert. I was hooked. Thanks for putting this together, rickyon!

  • You're welcome Jim Flint!

  • The most powerful piece of music Kansas ever wrote.

If there was 5 pieces of music I could only hear. This would be one of them.

  • Ugghh...great song, HIDEOUS styling of Steve Walsh. He looks so skinny & faggy- like he should be teaching jazz dance class later.

  • @rickyon The ones I know of are Cadott 1995 which I have and Las Vegas 1996 on ArizonaBasement's channel. Cool to hear your getting some video!!

  • And I am SURE you know what faggy looks like,,,,,,do tell

  • @LuvIzAhl lucky person!

  • LMFAO! That was probably the funniest comment I've read in a long time! Well the reason why he looks skinny is because he lost quite a bit of weight due to his heavy coke use. As for the "faggy" part, well it's either the 1980's, the cocaine making him dress goofy, or both!
