I haven't seen this.... but I notice that Paltrow doesn't seem to make any attempts to sound like Plath did. I'm referring to her voice... would've been great if she had.

@toloveinthird continuing: Like in TBJ, Plath also attempted suicide by taking sleeping pills and hiding in a cave in her cell. She did go to a mental institution, funded by her benefactor, just like in the book.

@toloveinthird In The Bell Jar's carse, however, the character of Esther Greenwood is obviously a version of Plath herself. The majority of the book is autobiographical except for a few exceptions. You can research this if you want. Like Esther in TBJ, Plath won a guest editor position w/ Mademoiselle magazine while attending college. Plath did live in NYC for a summer and was so disillusioned by her experiences there that when she returned home she sunk into a great depression.

even the portrayal of plath in this movie is bizarre. the opening scene of the film is a line from "lady lazarus" and sets the movie up as if Plath herself is the character of lady lazarus. if anyone is really interested in this, i'd suggest reading georgiana banitas essay "the same identical woman: plath and the media" it's amazing.
ps--i'm writing a thesis on this film which is why i'm super nerdy over it :)

@MeinKleinTier The Bell Jar is not about Sylvia Plath at all, it'sa fictional novel with a character named Esther Greenwood. Of course the Plath character is different in the movie because it is portraying Plath not the fictional character of Greenwood. There IS a huge difference between a character an author creates and the author him/herself.

ugh. gwyneth paltrow can never do justice to Plath. one of those really bland actresses

This was an amazing movie. I own it. I respect Sylvia so much, Im so sorry that her life ended the way it did. =(

mysticgirl1000, I have just read Anne Stevenson's 'Bitter Fame' so I do not agree with your comment:
'controlled by the hughes...their campaign to defame her...to cover up for the dysfunction of his family' - Given that Hughes published her undiscovered poems- is this a fair comment? The Feminists painted Hughes in a very poor light- Sylvia did provoke the affair through her volatile behaviour, and in fact Hughes's family were always kind to Sylvia- I would recommend the biography to you.
the line that i will always remember from this film: "Sometimes, I feel like I never wrote anything...never thought anything."
it just pierces me when i hear her say that.
