TV Show Hosted by Evangelical Christians Canceled
Too Christian for Cable?

A TV show featuring evangelical Christians was canceled!

The bad news? It's not Duck Dynasty

There's no good news.

Two brothers named David and Jason Benham were slated to star in a new show on the HGTV network called Flip It Forward where they would renovate rundown houses.

The Benham family has a long awful history. The father, Flip, is the head of Operation Save America or Operation Rescue -- they blockaded abortion clinics for years. He shouted "Jesus Hates Muslims" outside of mosques...

David Benham led a prayer rally outside the DNC meeting in 2012, he's gone on the radio to complain about the homosexual agenda and how "demonic ideologies" are taking over our schools"... He referred to Muslims -- all Muslims -- as the enemy attacking America. His brother has joined him on some of these protests and rallies.

So HGTV canceled their show before it ever aired. Totally makes sense. These guys are a liability. They're hateful people. Why deal with that media firestorm and alienate your audience if you don't have to?

Just to be clear, the brothers still have their free speech. No one is taking that away from them. But free speech doesn't guarantee that you get your own TV show, and HGTV had to decide between promoting bigots and facing the wrath of viewers who wouldn't stand for it.

But here's a different question: How come other reality shows feature conservative Christians but they're still on the air?

We know the Duck Dynasty people are homophobic... so why are they still on the air? Well, they're one of the highest rated shows on cable. A&E doesn't want to cancel them if they don't have to.

The Duggars of 19 Kids and Counting? They don't usually speak about homosexuality and when they do, they don't do it with nasty sound bites that are easy to spread around. Furthermore, we know they're conservative Christians. No one's surprised by that.

HGTV is actually premiering another show featuring a conservative Christian family soon -- but the main draw to that show, blogger Jen Hatmaker, doesn't talk about homosexuality all that much. She thinks she can rise above the culture wars by not discussing the issue. She's one of those people who quietly says she supports one man and one woman... and then blames other Christians for being so anti-gay, as if she's not one of them herself. But she definitely won't be caught making awful anti-gay statements.

So the Benhams are canceled. But I wouldn't worry about them too much. I'm sure Fox News is working on a show for them.
