I deserve neither your scorn nor your ridicule, Madam. I have been nothing but kind to you in your argumentative disposition. Your perception of humanity is quite tragic indeed; not all of us are malicious, evil people who seek to overcome others with control and manipulation. The fact that you "laugh" at kindness and helpful gesture makes me weep for humanity and the state to which our interaction has arrived. Adieu, Madame; je vous souhaite quand meme une tres bonne journee, malgre tout!

You don't judge people...? I have a feeling you're are either a genuine victim of academia, or a wannabe victim of academia. Either way, anyone who says someone as clownish as "You mistake me for, again, someone who judges people." is deserving of all manner of ridicule. Thanks for the laugh. Every human action, every human word every uttered, is done so upon judgement, either profound or instantaneous. You are either a liar or a deluded fool, either way I am now bored. I bid you adieu.

You mistake me for, again, someone who judges people. You, as all human beings, are entitled to any interpretation of a literary work that your mind allows. I simply seek to point out that great books affect humans because they truly encourage profound thoughts and perhaps make us reevaluate prejudice and preconceived notions. My utterings are not vacuous; they are sincere and i hope you take them to heart. Have a lovely day.

Why the euphemisms? Just come out and say you think I am an close-minded ignorant b*tch! You wouldn't be the first, nor will you be the last. LOL! I have no time for normative b.s. I think what I do, and any and everyone are welcome to disagree with me. Keep the highbrow gibberish for those who appreciate such vacuous utterings. I read the book and my assessment is Anna Karenina is a selfish b*tch.

Well, i will not lower my integrity by arguing, but i will simply submit the observation that again, i find your opinions thus far entrenched heavily in social constructs. My advice, and please take this in the most delicate way: try to open your mind a bit, everything isn't always so black and white. To judge others is ultimately, to judge yourself. Literature isn't meant to be socially, morally, or philosophically austere; it is meant to provoke and encourage genuine thought. Thanks :)

I don't need to force myself to agree with Tolstoy. Whatever his perspective, a piece of literature is to be judged independently by each individual reader. I have read many books and come to a contrary opinion of the majority, or even of the author himself/herself. I think Anna was a selfish b*tch. The fact that Russian society was also hypocritical and sexist does not in my mind mitigate Anna's culpability. I also read The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and find that May is the heroine.

I will say that, while i try not to judge people due to circumstance, you should perhaps delve more into Tolstoy's own perspective on his work to understand why he wrote what he did and, more importantly, the progressive transformation of Anna in his own mind. I don't have enough room here to explain sufficiently, but ultimately his intention was to justify her actions based upon a polemic of his own society.
