A man charged with assault on an Edina police officer last fall was sentenced to 120 months in prison July 31.
Anthony Steven Hill, 44, of Otsego, was sentenced to the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud for assault on a police officer in the first degree.
Around 9 a.m. Sept. 20, 2008, Edina police officers responded to a report of a domestic incident on the 5600 block of Beard Avenue. A man had reportedly injured a woman with a gun during an argument.
Officers found him hiding in a bedroom closet. He then stepped out of the closet and pivoted into a shooting stance, pointing a .44 magnum gun at officers. One of the officers then used a Taser on Hill, which caused him to drop to the handgun. Officer Eric Carlson then pushed him to the floor and handcuffed him.
Officers later found a bullet hole in a door and a shell indicating the man had shot the gun off before officers arrived.
Hill was previously convicted of fifth-degree domestic assault in 2003 in Maple Grove. That incident involved the same woman.
State Representative Erik Paulsen spoke this afternoon at the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerces 40th anniversary celebration. Paulsen has been meeting with constituents during Congress's August Recess and said that the health care reform bill moving through the federal government will affect people more than any other issue.
He's no fan of the status quo, he said. But the 1,000-plus-page House bill is not the right approach, because it focuses too much on getting coverage for uninsured Americans instead of reducing costs across the board.
Paulsen suggested that small businesses should be allowed to pool their resources to get lower rates. Young people should be allowed to stay on their parents' insurance plans until age 26, he said.
The bill will likely be pushed through the house very quickly when congress returns from recess in September, Paulsen said.
