family bedroom on Southwest Chief. For the money, I would have just gotten 2 roomettes instead.

  • yea, My mother and i take it from NPV to FLG every year after xmas, and we get 2 roomettes right across the hall from each other. They are nice when you are by yourself!

  • So How much is this room.

  • @edbreyer I rode the Zeph from Chicago to Emeryville, CA a few years ago with myself & 2 pre-teens in the Family Bedroom. The younger of my 2 boys took the upper kid's berth, which is a little longer than a baby's crib. with five packed in you WILL be cramped in the Family Bedroom.

One other trick I learned from an Amish guy on the train: he got sleeping accommodations for HALF regular price by purchasing unsold space onboard. Of course, that's a gamble- space could be sold out..

  • One more question - - Are both windows in this room smaller than typical rooms and roomettes? One (by the man) definitely seems pretty small - but the other one may just have the drape partially closed. We loved the 18 your ride each way on the City of New Orleans - but I'm worried that going round trip on the CA Zephyr may be too much. We're doing it mainly for the CO mountain scenery - but also will show the kids SF - but we could fly back for about the same cost as the return train ride.

  • My family of 5 (2A & 3 kids ages 9-14) are taking the CA Zephyr soon & I must decide btw a single family room or getting both a regular BR (with shower/toilet) and a roomette. We've done the second option before on a 19 hr trip b/c the FR wasn't available. It is now & will save us $800 each way. But I'm afraid it'll be too cramped - esp at night. Any thoughts? Also, is it noisier in the lower level FR - just over the wheels? Am I crazy to take the train both ways?

  • Brilliant! Heads down looking at electronic devices. Must have been shitty scenery.
