FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN (1732-1809)

Concerto for two lire organizzates, two violins, two violas, cello, doublebass, and two horns in C major Hob VIIh :1

1. Allegro con spiritu

Performed by Ensemble Baroque de Limoges et Quator Masaiques
Featuring Matthias Loibner and Thierry Nouat, lire organizzate

* A lire organizzate can be most easily described as a combination of the hurdy-gurdy and the chamber organ. It was the favorite instrument of Ferdinand IV, King of Naples whom this concerto was written for.

  • I heard these two players at a very memorable concert at St Pierre des Cuisines during the Toulouse Les Orgues festival. They were wonderful. I'd love to know where to get the CD.

  • I can send you the link to the CD via private message, but you need to accept my friend invite so that I can send it to you.

  • Do you know this childish wonder concert was written? So nice with period instruments, and style.. Thank you a lot:)

  • 1786. You're welcome. :)

  • What on earth is this dog barking on 5.10 ?

    :-D

  • And just by the way... where could I get this concerto on the internet? : )

You see... I've declared some kind of war against modernists playing (or what I think: ruining) Mozart,Haydn etc...

So I need more periodic informed performances from the classical era :)

.. hehe.. I do also have proper clothing from that period...

  • I love the fact that the dog barks exactly when instruments silence.

  • @erikomertens Noticed that on my CD. Seems too well placed to be an accident. Probably the sound engineer having laugh. Or maybe it was the 12th take of the day, they finally got it right, the dog barked at the end of the cadenza and they decided to keep it in for sheer bloody-minded fun.

  • Why is that barking dog in it at 5:09

  • The Edwin A. Fleisher Collection at the Free Library of Philadelphia possesses the scores and full sets of parts for I-V as well as a hurdy-gurdy with two spools (I don't recall which movements).

  • Such a happy concerto! Thanks for sharing, definitely one of my favourites!

  • It is absolutely that!

And I'm still pretty much glad that you posted this :)

    Again; Thanks a Lot!!

  • You know, I've had absolutely no idea what that sound was. I thought that it was either one of the soloists snickering, or it was one of the lire organizzates changing between organ mode and hurdy gurdy mode.

BTW, is this not one of the most happy concertos you've ever heard? I think of it as the musical waying of saying "what a nice day today!" :)
