Well said. You sometimes grow up your whole life with only a single impression of a particular personality, and may never have the good fortune to see them in any other light. Because Mr. Lahr was already gone by he mid-60's, I never saw his commercials or any of his plays. "Oz" was it- until this wonderful appearance on WML as himself. Just splendid.
I never saw Bert Lahr live in a play or musical myself. I remember his 1960s commercials. There he was a character rather than just himself. I see that same basic character in his film and TV work, with the exception of this one guest spot. Which is what makes it so special to me.
My mother saw many musicals and plays on Broadway in the 1930s and 40s. She said she loved Bert Lahr and said it adoringly, in the same way Arlene Francis said he was so "heavenly." Clearly the opinion of all.
