The course will examine the special contributions African-American artists made to America during the unique period known as the Harlem Renaissance. We will explore why the period evolved, as well as relate modern European and African art styles to the myriad approaches and techniques used by such African-American painters and sculptors as Palmer C. Hayden, Aaron Douglas, Archibald J. Motley, Jr., Lois Mailou Jones, Meta Warrick Fuller, Richmond Barthe, and Sargent Johnson.
Susanna Lombardi has been teaching art history at Bay Area colleges and universities for more than 25 years, as well as lecturing regularly for Bay Area Classic Learning, Elderhostel. She also helped establish and direct the graduate humanities program at Dominican University.
