BOSTON -- Anthony Rizzo finally made his Fenway Park debut Monday - with the San Diego Padres.
One of the key linchpins in the trade last December that brought Adrian Gonzalez to Boston, the 21-year-old first baseman became the first prospect in the deal to make his major league debut on June 9.
He, along with righthander Casey Kelly, outfielder Reymond Fuentes and veteran outfielder Eric Patterson, were dealt to San Diego last Dec. 6 for Gonzalez.
Rizzo reached base in his first seven games and eight of his first nine overall but has slumped of late. He entered Monday's game at Fenway Park just 1-for-17 in his first six games of the nine-game road trip.
After being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, Rizzo overcame cancer to establish himself as one of the best prospects in the Boston organization.
This year, he earned his promotion to San Diego by batting .365, hitting 16 home runs, driving in 63 runs in 52 games for Triple-A Tucson this spring.
