'But Not For Me' - Solo Jazz piano lesson. For how to really play this try the version by Joe Chindamo (from Melbourne Australia)
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=ni1lK1_bGSM
By comparison this is rather pale! Nevertheless, with the added text comments, some students of jazz piano might get some ideas. Wouldn't it be great though, if some of the real greats did this - explain why they played this or that while improvising on a song that we knew well.
It may br difficult to read the notation - a much clearer version (in stereo) is at

  • It was very beautiful, technical and with some exciting chords. My compliment!

  • Makes me want to go shopping at Nordstroms.

  • magnificient, I love your commentary! Skill, I love jazz and Gerschwin, you make it look simple, when I know it ain't!

  • ehardi is right, this is the best version....I love Joe Chindamo, but his Tatumesque stylings don't work for me on this tune. I can't count the number of times I've listened to this version; it's just so 'right'. Doug has great touch, taste, and style; a perfect fit for Gershwin, and he swings!

  • a pianist trained in baroque -classical -romantic to 20th century hears these rhythms and unfathomable chords and colors and just listens like he has fallen throught the ground into another world. This is so beautiful. My Chopin my Boulez are a backseat to this world. Unbelievable color. When Scriabin and Berg etc. go past trad. harmony it's mean, delirious ,crazed, fragmented soul destroying music. Here it's all the joy -colors of the rainbow. How do my black brothers do this stuff?

  • I keep coming back to this one - great arrangement. And i love this song. Agreed with your writeup btw - Joe Chindamo's version is incredible.

  • I like your version better than joes...but thats just me

  • superb :)

  • You make it look so simple, and so it drives me mad ! How do you do it? What the best thing to practice. Its taken me fifteen years to learn a trill! Where do you play?

  • Lovely...You've certainly given me a lot of ideas. I recommend your videos to all my advanced guitar students, especially for chord/melody study. Thanks for posting, Doug. All the best to you!
