Long story, but India's transfer to independence was INCREDIBLY violent! Gandhi may have campaigned for peace, but the tensions between the Muslim and Hindu population of what was then "British India" forced the partition into India (Hindu), East Pakistan [now Bangladesh] and West Pakistan [now just Pakistan] (both Muslim). Huge amounts of fighting between these demographic groups makes India's fight for independence very violent, eventually leading to Gandhi's assassination.
