Actually, in the original play he was nice and compassionate and sympathetic. It's in the musical that they made him into a creep.

Hanschen's character is actually written to be a kind of lecherous creep, at least in the original play. I think they tried to make him a more sympathetic character in the musical, but to a certain extent he is a "creepo".
