Dubcek wasn't a stalinian but a reformer communist, probably close to swedish social-democrats. And Kundera's affair isn't very simple to consider.

Hello Socialism without democracy is not socialism. Communism without freedom is not communism... It is time to return to the origin of those words and ideas, and stop calling "communists" the bureaucrats and rulers that were in fact impostors, the political regimes which were sad caricatures of bourgeois revolutions. Dubcek was a commy in the true sens of the word. Communism is still a good hypothesis about human history...

The greatest marxist is History itself. It showed that Leninism led to Stalinism. Dubcek, as a true marxist, wanted to empower civil society so that it follows its own developpement as it is possible in the hegemony of capitalism: maybe this would lead to another Sweden. But that's human history. Communism can only come from a highly developed capitalism, showing contradiction between the potential for human liberation and the confinement of this potential by capitalism.

@antostagan: How was Leninism a bad idea? It was implementation of Marxism. Alexander Dubcek was just another Stalinist bureaucrat. A liberal Stalinist but still a Stalinist. The whole concept of "Socialism with a human face" was to remove the most unpopular elements of Stalinism in Czechoslovakia while still preserving the power, privelages, and rule of the Stalinist bureaucracy. He later demonstrated his Stalinist sell-out trait when he joined Vaclav Havel's counter-revolutionary goons in 1989

Mesherschmidt thank you, to keep the memory. History shows that Leninism was a very bad idea. To be brief, I would say that Karl Marx himself was foremost a democrat, he had never agreed with this idea of a vanguard party who lead on behalf of the people ... Anyway for me Alexander Dubcek was a great man, who deserve the name of communist ... And Karel Kryl is a great poet, great singer.
btw..do you know what he did a year after he failed with his policies? he passed a law that all demonstrations against the regime should be pressed by the police or army in a violent way..a so called pendrekový zákon law..thanks to that, 3 people died
