Peak Moment 191: What we eat is destroying both our bodies and the planet, according to author Lierre Keith, a recovering twenty-year vegan. While she passionately opposes factory farming of animals, she maintains that humans require nutrient-dense animal foods for good health. A grain-based diet is the basis for degenerative diseases we take for granted (diabetes, cancer, heart disease) - diseases of civilization. Annual grain production is destroying topsoil and creating deserts on a planetary scale. Lierre urges the restoration of perennial polycultures for longterm sustainability.

    I have no scientific background so this is solely my observation of what evidence i can find.

    The human race as we know it today has evolved over many thousands of years eating meat, yes we may have experimented with fruits and berries when food was short, but overwhelmingly mean was the main constituent of our diets, this is because meat provides the most nutritionally and fat dense foods which our large brain require. This lady is right about the corporations that run the worlds food supply.

    Who says that vegans are based on a sugar and starch diet. I would highly recommend that for your research you ask also people actually LIVING on a vegan diet and if they get fat and angry and whatever.

    Not to insult you, but basically you are totally convinced that she is right and so the vegan lifestyle will make everyone sick, although there are so many people out there who will tell you that it is the other way round. Watch the Bill Clinton Interview about him turning a vegan and why. I personally know long term diabetes people who are now much better, ever since they turned vegan.

    Just enter red meat linked to heartattacks and you will easily find the site of the Harvard Institute for Health.: According to this work, published online in the journal Nature Medicine, eating red meat delivers L-carnitine to bacteria that live in the human gut. These bacteria digest L-carnitine and turn it into a compound called trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO). In studies in mice, TMAO has been shown to cause atherosclerosis, the disease process that leads to cholesterol-clogged arteries.
