I sometimes think that the palmas (flamenco hand clapping) is my favorite part of flamenco, other times I think it is the fast footwork ... can't decide.

i've seen flamenco dancers do sudden 'tortilla' palmas while dancing Bulerías. Or, while singing, when the singer is infused into the rhythm, he/she may often gesture 'tortilla' palmas.

Thanks for the offer. Actually, I have eaten plenty of fresh tortillas in Mexico and you are right, they are lovely. I have friends here in Northern California who make me fresh tortillas, and fresh tamales. I still think the best commercial packaged tortillas are Trader Joes. Ummm, Mexican food!!!!
BESTEVAAR, do you dance flamenco? Have you been to Spain to study flamenco?
Compás is the Spanish word for metre and time signature in classical music theory. In flamenco, besides having these meanings, it also refers to the rhythmic cycle, of a palo or flamenco style. When performing flamenco it is important to feel the rhythm — the compás — rather than mechanically count the beats, but a beginner must start somewhere (one must learn to walk before they can run, no?).

There are also free-form styles, not subject to any particular metre, including, among others, the palos in the group of the tonás, the saetas, malagueñas, tarantas, and some types of fandangos.
There are Americans and many other nationalities across the globe that are actually getting paid to perform flamenco. It's interesting that I haven't seen your name appear on any marquee.
Please cease to verbalize your ignorance.
