Messy storm heads eastward Tuesday

South

- As the storm and cold front begin to slide eastward, rain and thunderstorms will be ongoing or developing from the lower Mississippi Valley and coastal Texas to the southern Appalachians, west Georgia and the Florida Panhandle on Tuesday.

- Rainfall could locally near 1 inch, especially in western or central Tennessee.

- A few severe storms are possible across Louisiana, eastern Arkansas, Mississippi, western Tennessee and western Alabama.

- Any lingering snow and wind in the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma will gradually come to an end. Snowfall totals in the northwest Texas Panhandle and western Oklahoma Panhandle could top 1 foot with plenty of high drifts.

- Lows will range from the teens and 20s in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles to the 50s and 60s around the Gulf Coast.

- With temperatures 5 to 20 degrees below average in the southern Plains but average to 10 degrees above average elsewhere, highs will range from the upper 20s and near 30 degrees in the Oklahoma Panhandle to the 70s from southeast Louisiana to eastern South Carolina, southern Georgia and Florida.

- Showery rain and a few thunderstorms will target the Southeast midweek but mostly staying north of the Florida Peninsula.

Midwest

- The Kansas snow and wind diminishes Tuesday with totals topping 1 ft in the southwest part of the state.

- A snow, rain and sleet mix will develop from the Iowa/Missouri line to the southern Great Lakes with little or no accumulation.

- Rain will extend across Missouri and the Ohio Valley with amounts from .5 to 1.5 inches.

- Mostly sunny skies will extend from the Dakotas to northern Michigan.

- Lows will range from the teens and 20s in the Plains and Upper Midwest to the 30s and 40s in the Ohio Valley.

- With temperatures below average in Kansas but average to 15 degrees above average over the remainder of the region, highs will range from between the mid 20s and low 40s from the Plains to Great Lakes to the 40s and 50s in much of Missouri and the Ohio Valley.

- The rain is slow to exit the Ohio Valley midweek and a little snow could continue to mix in on the northern fringe of the storm toward the southern Great Lakes. Meanwhile, a few snow showers will develop near the Canadian border while light snow streaks out of the Northwest into South Dakota.

Northeast

- Cold front stalls in the southern Virginias Tuesday.

- Some Mid-Atlantic showers are possible, mixed with snow and sleet especially in the mountains.

- Most persistent showers will target western Pennsylvania.

- Mostly sunny skies are on tap for Upstate New York and New England.

- Lows will range from the teens near the Canadian border to the upper 30s and 40s in the Virginias.

- With temperatures below average in northern New England but above average in the Virginias, highs will range from the teens in northern Maine to the upper 40s and 50s across the Virginias.

- The rain arrives in force midweek, possibly mixed with snow to start in parts of Upstate New York, and snow develops from northern Vermont to west-central Maine.

West

- Lingering snow showers are possible early in the day in eastern Colorado and northeast New Mexico.

- Showers will dampen western Washington and northwest Oregon as a storm moves into British Columbia.

- Snow showers will increase from the Cascades to the northern Rockies.

- Windy conditions in the Montana Chinook zone will lead to gusts up to 50 mph.

- Lows will range from between 0 degrees and the 20s across the interior to the 30s and 40s across the lower elevations of California and the Desert Southwest.

- With temperatures from near average to 15 degrees below average in the Four Corners states but average to 10 degrees above average elsewhere, highs will range from between 20 degrees and the 40s across the interior to the 50s and 60s in much of California and the deserts.

- Midweek, snow will crank up across the interior Northwest, Utah and northern Colorado. Parts of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming could see as much as 3 to 8 inches of snow.
