When Proposition 8 went on the ballot, a majority of voters were for marriage equality.
In a matter of a few months, the mormon church set up a front group, the National Organization for Marriage, so that any negative public perception of the mormon church wouldn't affect their goal of adding discrimination to the California constitution, banning marriage equality.
They succeeded, and Prop 8 passed. But the mormon church violated US tax laws in their actions supporting the proposition, and are now up for automatic revocation of their tax-exempt status. - http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=225889,00.html?portlet=7 (click on Utah)
