Coal Plant climbing Protest

Eleven Greenpeace activists scaled a 150 meter high chimney of Pątnów power plant, belonging to ZE PAK (Zespoł Elektrowni Pątnów-Adamów-Konin SA) this morning and held a banner reading: Quit coal, save the climate. Pątnów power plant is supplied with lignite from the nearby open cast mine Konin and emits approx. 10 millions ton of CO2 each year, more than the entirety of Latvia. To sustain the operation of the power plant the Konin mine company plans to open a new open cast mine in Tomislawice which will threaten the climate and local environment. In the meantime Greenpeace was also peacefully protesting in front of the main entrance of the Pątnów power plant. Shortly police arrived and 9 activists were driven away.
