With them being an irish band, they use tenor banjos - four stringed banjos normally tuned exactly the same as the mandolin, so the riff works well for both instruments, and a mandolin will do the job just fine. :)

Take it or leave it; you may want to move your right hand over top of the sound hole when you pick. I think you would be happy with the change.
