CHAN:
A weight loss hospital in China is attracting locals and foreigners alike. The traditional medicine clinic specializes in a program of herbal remedies and acupuncture, which is apparently very efficient.

STORY:
American citizen Alonzo Bland travelled halfway around the world with one goal-- to lose weight. He hopes the Aimin clinic in Tianjing City will be able to help him achieve what he has not been able to do back home -- shed the pounds and find a cure to the numerous health problems that come with being overweight.

32 year-old Bland blames fast food and an unhealthy lifestyle for his weight gain.

[Alonzo Bland, Weight Loss Clinic Patient]:
"I think that fast food has played a big role, just the choices of being able to go in the kitchen and fix something healthy or get in the car and go around the corner to get something that's fast and that is not healthy and so forth, so yeah, I do think that plays a role as well"

Chinese food, mainly green vegetables, tofu and rice, is Bland's new diet. After he failed to lose weight back home, he says he is determined to reach his goal with strong willpower and the help of traditional Chinese medicine.

[Alonzo Bland, Weight Loss Clinic Patient]:
"My ultimate goal, which is you know, to lose weight and be healthier, it is up to me, but Chinese traditional medicine will help that along, and make the transition a lot smoother for me."

The unique treatment includes acupuncture, cupping and massages. They are combined with traditional Chinese herbal medicine, which is also an important part of the therapy. The rest, the patients will have to work it off with a combination of sports and exercise.

In 2002, some 200 million Chinese adults were considered overweight by national standards. While another 60 million were obese, according to an Asian Development Bank report. This is more than double the 1992 levels.

  • yeah grew up In Fried Chicken and a Soda , but originally from Roast beef when his family moved from Chicken McNuggets in every corner. Aint that right eastern2western

  • brother is going to die in china because he grew up in fried chicken and soda and now now has to go to china and eat that kind of steamed vegies and rice. but nicest thing about china is that there is always a kfc in every corner

  • Seems like that would be expensive.

  • Check my page!

  • least hes making an effort... the take out is full of msg and stuff americans like to taste what i saw in this video, seems more healthy, mostly steamed, more authentic. I hope me makes his goal!

  • I think it's ironic that, he put all that weight on eating Chinese take-out in America.

Meanwhile China is still loading food up with melamine

  • Well, I hope he loses weight with TCM. Conventional medicine can help with invasive methods such as stomach stapling surgery and drugs to suppress appetite, and fats.
