This is one of my all time favorite original videos.

I have been told since uploading that this train is most likely Q687 that used to be routed down the old Monon Railroad that ran at that time from Bedford, IN through New Albany Indiana. The power is a treat! Two UP units sandwich a CNW unit!

CSX stopped running these long trains on that line several years ago. This railroad is now railbanked and used for car storage with an uncertain future.

This is one of my first railfan videos shot in DV with my Sony VX2000 that was stolen. I had misplaced the tape and just found it recently. I hope you enjoy this blast from the past!

  • Nice video! Do you know if this section of the rail line (from Charlestown Rd down to the river) is still in use?

  • @LvilleRyder I believe they still run a train out to Pillsbury on Grant Line Road very occasionally. That's Vernia siding. They can't run trains past there because there are cars stored all along the line up to Mitchell.

  • I corrected the location information and description based on feedback from stoors19. Thanks!

  • Can't be Q686 as it is coming south. Probably Q687. It's crossing Elm Street in your video. Thanks much for sharing with us. I remember August 8, 1993 when CSX started running trains on the former Monon again. Now the line is a parking lot north of New Albany and nothing is served except for Pillsbury.

  • I'll correct the location on the map. I could not remember the street. They were running some huge trains down this line back then. They had one go into emergency down there one Saturday and it caused a real mess for the traffic in New Albany. The radio traffic was interesting because NS had to coordinate with CSX getting them into the yard.

  • Oh .. my lord .. I can't imagine New Yorkers waiting 6 minutes for a train to cross... they won't even wait the 45 seconds it takes a 5 car train to run down the Bushwick Branch and cross Morgan Avenue

  • Awesome Catch!!!!

  • is it scary haveing a train in the middle of the road

  • Oh yes. I've seen some interesting things before when a train goes into emergency and ties the whole town up. NS has control of the track from the South Switch at Vernia (Beechwood Avenue) all the way through and across the bridge. This dates back from the days of K&I control.
