  • Thanks eggiedawl! I use Krylon spray varnish, the one that is marked as archival, UV resistant, non-yellowing, acrylic. I tried several different brands (and ruined several paintings!), and this was the only brand of spray that didn't turn yellow.

  • Hi Thedancingbrush, I haven't tried painting on paper after it's been mounted, but I don't think it would be any different. I'm more likely to mess up a painting than i am to mess up the mounting process, so I've only done it with finished paintings. The paper cannot be removed after it's mounted, so if I make a painting mistake, I couldn't reuse the board unless I mounted another painting on top of it.

  • Hi Juliet, I bought my boards from Dick Blick. The hardboard surface is pre-primed with an archival finish and ready to use, and the sides are mitred plywood with clear birchwood verneer that can be painted, stained, or left natural. Several companies make deep-cradled art boards, and I think it's probably cheaper to buy them than to try to make them.

  • Awesome tutorial! What brand name spray varnish do you use?

  • Great tut!

  • I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the paper exposed like that to moisture, marks or dust.

  • This is great as I have been trying to get away from mat boards and glass for some time. Can one continue painting on the paper after it's been mounted on tbe board?

  • Great tutorial! I think I'll do this from now on. Did you buy the art boards, or do you know of a tut on how to make them? Thanks!
