What an experience in Chicago O'Hare airport. I was bothered by a contractor who did not make an appropriate conduct. He even offered his arm twice for me to lean on like I couldn't walk. All I couldn't do was to hear. Watch my story.

  • @1965nterp WTF?? Isnt that for people who cant walk far or walk at all???

  • it reminds me of a time i interpret for a college. the student was asked to go to the main office i went with to interpret they told the student "because your handicapped we have to provide you with this they handed him a handicapped parking tag for his car he was SHOCKED HE SAID IM NOT HANDICAPPED IM DEAF

  • I believe the Chicago airport is similar to my local airport - many many immigrants work there. I wonder if the "contractor" man was one of them? If so, I can understand what happened - they try so hard to do their jobs! In their home countries, not doing what you're told can mean death - so they take their work very seriously. From what you describe, it sounds like the contractor was trying to figure out what type of "help" you "needed." His employee handbook maybe no Deaf chapter? [smile]

  • That situation makes it embarrassing to be hearing! As an interpreter i sometimes wish it were appropriate to reach over and smack the hearing person, but being (or trying to be) a PROFESSIONAL interpreter I restrain myself, but boy-oh-boy do i get happy when my deaf client smacks them (literally or figuartively)!! rock on!! or should i say: "Keep on rollin!"

  • my husband used to work in an airport. he said that Deaf or not, this happens to people all too often. TSA are not necessarily college grads and often times if someone checking you in even *assumes* you have some sort of special need, it is put into a computer but cannot be specified at all. so if they put you in the computer as "DA" it could mean quadriplegic or Deaf - with no explanation differentiating between the two. anyway, i know it's not important, but might make you feel better. :)

  • at least u were treated like a queen and let him haul ur stuffs LOL

  • What is it with people? I'm Deaf; i need terps or CART. I don't need a wheelchair, wheelchair-accessible accommodations, or BRAILLE, fercryinoutloud! So many people take the one-size-must-fit-all approach to access and abandon common sense. You'd think seeing someone walking while rejecting the offer of a wheelchair would give them a clue, but apparently not.

  • Yes! Thats exactly what I went through at atlanta too :)

  • I guess he have pea brain.... WTF!! he needs a current BRAIN!! not 1950's BRAIN! LoL
