1983 Mazda Rx7 0-60 Test updated: Engine was flushed, AC belt removed, and Better shifting.

The Mazda RX-7: The RX-7 was produced by Mazda from 1978 to 2002. The original RX-7 featured a 1.1 L twin-rotor Wankel engine in a RWD layout. The RX-7's compact and light-weight Wankel engine or rotary engine is placed right behind the front axle which was therefore marketed by Mazda as a "front mid-engine" car. The RX-7 was made to be a replacement for the RX-3 but it eventually replaced all other Mazda rotary cars with the exception of the Cosmo. The handling and acceleration of the car were excellent for the day. This generation RX-7 had "live axle" 4-link rear suspension, and a 50/50 weight ratio weighing just under 2500 lb making it the lightest generation of RX-7 ever produced. The 12A engine produced 100 hp, taking the car up to 120 mph and accelerating from 0--60 mph in 9.2 seconds. Because of the smoothness from the Wankel engine, little vibration was experienced at high revs, so a buzzer was fitted to the tachometer to warn drivers of the approaching redline. Options as well as models varied from country to country. The gauge layout and interior styling in the third series was only changed for North American versions. North America was also the only market to offer the first generation RX-7 with the fuel injected 13B GSL-SE. A turbocharged 12A engine was available for the top-end model of Series 3 in Japan.

  • 9.9 seconds for your 83 RX7? my buddies goes 0-60 in 6 seconds, stock engine, with 'homemade' exhaust system.

  • @Dude13450 Yeah no that's horse shit. These cars made a little under ten seconds when they were brand new and stock. Unless your buddy's exhaust system also includes porting and a bit of forced induction/nitrous work, he isn't making 6 seconds.

  • my uncle has a 1983 rx7 he might give me but it needs some fixing he drove it into the ground literaly but i like this car should i get it or not?

  • @MrIpossibleJames Depends. If the engine or transmission need a rebuild I wouldn't. I'm sure some people would disagree.

  • @dandooshnanoosh considering the age and mile i think it is pretty decent, the 0-60 time back when the car was new was 9.4 seconds so it really didnt loose too much power over the years
