Shanta Devarajan, Chief Economist for the Africa Region of the World Bank, speaks about the urgent need to address the shortcomings of development statistics in Africa. This is a keynote address prepared for the Conference on Measuring National Income, Wealth, Poverty, and Inequality in African Countries held in Cape Town, South Africa, on September 30, 2011.
The economy of Africa especially the SSA are not completely monetized as they use goods directly produced from their farm yards. Goods such as cows, goats are not included in the GDP caculation. Given this situation it is very uncertain even to determine the level of poverty. They aslo have the rent acrued from natural resources however the contribution to their survival is very meagre. The last thing is the protruding underground economy which the same are not included in the calculation of GDP
