We visited Meka's whimsical cob cottage in southern Oregon in September 2006. Cob is a mixture of earth, sand and straw. www.cobprojects.info Contact info for Meka:

  • Gorgeous. I wish I could find a house like this for myself and my dog. Most houses in the US are ugly, unimaginative, stupid looking, impractical and tasteless.

  • Finding the land is the hard part, for me at least. Meka built this cottage on someone else's property. He doesn't "own" it. Ianto Evans suggests finding a landowner and offering to build such a place in exchange for 5 years rent free living.

Not a bad idea, especially if you're young.

  • how beautiful. I can't imagine how much work and time went into this. I don't think I'd be able to do it... maybe one day I'll build a cob oven or a small meditation house... maybe :) .

  • It's true, it probably took a great deal of time and work. But the work was often play, I think. And how much time do folks spend paying off a mortgage? If I recall, this house only cost about $6000 to build! And it is the most welcoming house I've ever been in.

  • I want to build me own house like this in asheville,NC!... i even have a name for it,,the "Hobitat"....:P

  • Great name!

  • 5 IDIOTS DISLIKED THIS, WHY, FUCK PEOPLE......

  • Love the design. Your cottage is so idiosyncratic. Each space feels so genius with the creative symmetry breaking in the accented shelving. The lighting from the creative shaped windows makes everything feel so surprising. Your home is a true treasure. Thanks for sharing.

  • ^.^ charming.

  • Nice.....Where's the door and where's the john???..

  • This is probably my fave cobb house in video. I love the so many personal touches like the blue bottles in the wall. And I love the built in stuff, shelves and I like the eyes over the bed too. I just love this place. Everytime I watch this I instantly feel warm and cozy. I want one so bad. People always confront me with the statement, "you can't build one in WA state on the Olympic Peninsula cuz of the rain". But I hear it can be done. Look at Europe-thatched roofs 100's yrs old.

  • how many square feet is it?
