as tho beards were a sign of anything more than the ability to grow one. in this case, the desire to please an artist they respected, created some tension in their spontaneous perfomance. music is the creation and release of tension. in my impression, while shooting this, cage enjoyed the comraderie of fellow artists in their environment.
Cage seems unduly gracious to a bunch of fellows obviously convinced they they are equally as great. I like seeing how casually they introduce themselves to Cage, yet there's a kind of supressed ego/envy behind their actions. This video is indeed a gem! (I wonder what a sociologist would say about it.)
my memory is...cage was brought to rutmans studio by the wombat. the wombat had corresponded with cage for some years about the making of paper and invited him to visit while in cambridge. to the wombats' surprise cage accepted. needing a suitable meeting place he chose rutmans studio. my impression was one of younger artists performing for the frail master. cage was very sweet and at ease, surrounded by creative performance artests.
A bunch of guys with beards. John Cage is superior to them . By the way I don't like their composition. It is somewhat forced.
