One thing which I forgot to point out in the video: the subject (main theme) is also in a way self-referring, that is, there is a small structure detail in it which also appears at a larger scale. The detail is: three rising steps. Although subject to other constraints, the subject can be looked at like this:

Take a quick melody fragment with three rising steps.

Copy and transpose this fragment three times, each time raising it. This slower melody's tonal centers are the larger structure copy of the quicker fragment.

A little bit like what you see in fractals. Difficult to explain but this picture sort of shows it.

  • Wtf O_o

I hate fugues. I can't play them. My brain can't get around them. Too much shit is happening at once. It's weird. Fuck that. Minimalism > fugues.

  • well this is minimalisn in a way, there's just lots of it :)

  • it's me, i do have two heads.. har har.

    :O!!

    I Can't Belive it!

    Jens Johansson in youtube! :O

  • he's showing you that this incredibly complex piece is actually just a number of very simple runs - which he performs at the beginning and labels individually. When you put the runs together, and change their octaves, and repeat them in various orders, then you get the Fuga.

the letters that you see in the timeline at showing you where the individual snippets are (the ones he pointed out in the beginning)
