Aug 2006
East Timor's Prime Minister, Mari Alkatiri, was dramatically forced to resign after weeks of violence and chaos in June 2006. Gone was the man alleged to have armed a hit squad to eliminate his political opponents. The resignation prompted Australia to spend millions of dollars supporting the idea of constitutional democracy in East Timor and has hundreds of troops there maintaining the fragile peace.

But, as the troubles subside, there are key strategic and security issues at stake for both countries.

  • @bebek1998 Yes you are totally right, Xanana and Horta are clowns of Australia and their friends...

  • Unfortunately after this day, I can tell that E.Timorese will never get their dream of freedom and wealth (the same with Papua New Guenea). The Brits/the Aus will sucked all their natural resources except a little.

  • The crisis is happening instigated by Alkatiri's refusal about oil revenue's sharing plan from the Brits/Australian govern. Australian removed him by using Xanana's and Ramos' influence.

  • Maybe they should adopt australian as the new offical language, dont you think, mack?

The portuguese language is an extension of the culture/identity of the east timorese people, theres a link between portugal and timor leste that lasted 500 years. Plus, the portuguese language was used as a political weapon against indonesian occupation, as it was cherished by the population that refused jakartas rule. And, 4 your information, there are 2 offical languages:Tetum and Portuguese.

  • u rite dude

  • i'm sorry for these actions. i heard from some of my timorese friends in Indonesia who studied on their parents salary said that alkatiri was choosy when sending timorese student study abroad such as Malaysia. from this video, i learn someone[alkatiri] who tried to defend east timor right on oil and natural gas offshore east timor. i've read somewhere where Dr. Alkatiri is one of the leading expert on engineering field from teaching in mozambique i think.

  • omg...when can those dumbass stop killing each other?GOSH!

  • you are wrong

timorese currency is osan or centavos

euro never be used in timor leste

they use us dollar but will create a national bank this year

tetum is the oficial language with portugues and daily life is widely spoken

thanks leaders as alkatiri ramos horta and of cours xanana for liberation

young timorese never forget indonesian atrocities!!!!!!!!!!

they kill raped and destroy timorese people

  • of course we will exchange the language and also the currency probably we'll used rupiah or Euro. as long as xanana is the leader it will all be fine as our fighting to independence.
