It's a goddamn shame that more folks aren't aware of this incredible songwriter and singer. She was the first solo (not sharing writing credits with a man) female songwriter who simply blew me away, and it's truly staggering how many genuine classic songs she has penned. For many years now I have been pushing to get her inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, where she belongs.

I didn't even know of this woman until discovering her by chance here on youtube. Didn't know she wrote this song and several other very popular tunes covered by various artists.

Unfortunately, Americans lost out when comes to singers like Buffy who were blacklisted by the government because of their expressing their own political views. Such other artists like Nana Mouskouri from Greece, Meriam Makeba from South Africa and even American singer Ertha Kitt. It's such a shame because each has something wonderful to share. Now, here on Youtube Americans can catch up what you missed.

As you may already know, she was blacklisted in the late '60s and early '70s by both the Johnson and Nixon administrations. She didn't start learning about it until sometime in the '90s. (She discusses this in some of her more recent interviews. Radio stations were contacted and told not to play her stuff.) ........ That may be one reason why she isn't better known. She says her "career took a nosedive" at the time she was blacklisted. She assumed at the time that tastes had changed.
