Here's my final Bucknell Open House Light Show. Designed to Paul McCartney's wonderful James Bond theme "Live and Let Die".

Control was from an ETC ION (huzzah, we own them now!), and fixture inventory is below:
6x Intellabeam 700HX
12x Seachanger Wash
4x Seachanger Profile
2x Rosco DMX Iris (in center icue units)
4x Rosco I-Cue in 19* Source 4s)
2x Dataflash AF1000 (4 in rig, 2 were used 'cause one flipped out)
4x Apollo Smart Move DMX in 50* Source 4 (stars)
18x Apollo Smart Color 7.25 in Source 4 PAR w/ACL Lens
16x N/C Source 4 PAR w/ ACL Lens
8x 26 degree Source 4 w/ gobo
10x pinspots
10x 150W T3 mini floods (mini blinders)
1x Grey RP Screen

I had immense fun designing this rig, but would never hang something this massive again without the help of many more people, some chainmotors, and probably truss. It was just a huge beast. The part with all of the color changing fixtures red and the halogens, pinspots, and ACL S4 Pars rolling around is my favorite part, and the windshield wiper kick in to the next section is my absolute favorite moment in the whole thing.

There is a slight video jump (see if you can find it!) where I had to take out some cue lag from when I filmed it. The show was run entirely on follow times, so it wasn't exactly perfect - the console, even though it's quite powerful, still backs up a little bit when you run more than 2 cues per second. Considering that there are just short of 500 cues in under 3 minutes, I'm not surprised.

I'm quite pleased with this one, though. I kept a more consistent color palette throughout, which I think worked in my favor. The rig design was awesome, the number of interlinked triangles that I fit in to this one is what I really like about it.

  • How many dimmers did you use?

  • @N17771 I don't know exactly how many dimmers it was, but I think the number was around 65 (I can't remember what all I twofered, but I think it was just the pinspot fans that were linked). The venue has 380 dimmers, about 360 of which are available around the theatre (rest reserved for houselights and worklights).

Also, remember that moving lights don't use dimmers, so those just straight circuits.

  • how do u make all those movements right on time>?

  • @sixvideos I use what are called "follow times" for my cues on the lighting console to make the cues go at the right time in the song. These are pre-determined to the hundredth of a second so that the lights match with the music.

  • Ion is a very nice console to program on. Very impressive. Your programming time would be cut significantly if you were on an Eos I think with the extra use of touch screens.

  • @Maxweisenberger I was using two 19" touchscreens to program with. I prefer that over an EOS because I can arrange the screens better and the screens are also bigger than those on the EOS. I like to have a customizable workspace so having the screens not attached to the console worked well. Not that I'd complain about having an EOS, mind you, but the ION worked fine and I don't think that I'd see much of a productivity increase with the EOS.
