GATEWAY

I. An Opening...
Composed second, the first movement of Gateway developed from a theme generated on a five string Spanish guitar, during winter, when snow drifts several miles high kept doors closed and composers indoors—drinking and thinking by the fireplace. As the Hampden house John and Anna were snowed in lacks a fireplace, David Lynch and Mark Frost's Twin Peaks was an excellent, if not superior, substitute. Fire walk with me. "It's an opening to a gateway"—a moment of dialogue, in a show full of surprises, took the composers by surprise and was cut up for the titles of this catalytic composition.


II. Cells and Gates
The movement 3RC was born from, originally constructed for supersharpshooter, now Music for Seven Musicians. Pulse Music is the preferred term; each cell grows, each gate creates more space, the saxophone swings faster around the maypole, and the stage is built for a jam band ending that stretches the original three-root theme until it snaps into the string outro, modulating like a mellotron on an old King Crimson LP.
