http://www.littlefish.com.au Great performance by Menuhin Academy Orchestra. Matched to steam engines in all their moods - the smoke, at high speed, heavy freights, roaring through stations, forging on through beautiful countryside. Even a non classical music fan can try! IMO great classical music violin / strings by Elgar one of the great classical composers... great orchestral music! Hope you'll feel it's an inspirational video with inspirational music. At least great listening... a great violin music video!! Inspiring music! Great music!

For non classical music fans, if you like railroad videos, steam engines, the most powerful steam locomotive in the world UP Challenger 3985 on a mainline railroad freight train, a fast steam engine on a mainline express train, English music (classical or good film music for railway videos about steam trains say in a Youtube mix), or if you are a railway preservation society enthusiast who loves heritage railways and old steam trains, then hope you enjoy a great video mix and an inspiring music video!

One of Ken Russell's "art films" was on Elgar. Makes for good film music - no prizes for guessing the "Ken Russell" shot!

Draft Notes To Complete Later: There's something special about steam trains travelling through the "English countryside".

The UK is the capital of preserved main line steam. New Zealand, Germany and Poland have quite a bit. US has not as much as expected. Australia, Japan and South Africa some. I've included a clip of Chinese steam -- impressive video clip.

A1 Tornado is an amazing project. In the UK there are great heritage railways like, The Bluebell Railway, The Mid Hants Railway, The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, The West Somerset Railway, The East Lancashire Railway, The Great Central Railway, The Keighly And Worth Valley Railway, The Kent & East Sussex Railway, The North Norfolk Railway, The Severn Valley Railway, The South Devon Railway, The Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway and of course narrow gauge like The Welsh Highland Railway.

In the US - Cumbres And Toltec, Durango And Silverton etc.

Note: Great railway journeys of the world by the BBC. West Coast Railways. The Cathedrals Express. Steam Dreams.

Sir Edward Elgar: Some of his most well know pieces are: - Enigma Variations. Nimrod variation. Cello Concerto in E Minor - Jacqueline Du Pre. Violin Concerto - Yehudi Menuhin. Salut D'Amour. Serenade For Strings. Symphony 1. Symphony 2. Great British music or great English music for the last night of the Proms with "Pomp And Circumstance March" and "Land Of Hope And Glory"

Ken Russell: His great movies on Mahler. Women In Love. Tommy. The Devils.

To complete.

  • Wonderful! If you love this watch Ken Russell's film about Elgar .

  • @tywyn6

Thanks a lot! Ken Russell's film is great. I watched it with my dad when I was a kid.

The shot that inspired this video is at 0.34 in..... Elgar: Portrait of a Composer (Ken Russell) Part 2 / 4 ... watch?v=zSCMEIjwUwk It somehow stayed in my mind.

My equivalent is at at 11:33 in this vid! I've just taken the initial idea and developed it into this whole vid to give visual expression to the whole of this brilliant piece. Hugh

  • WOW...! SUPER VIDEO. The white smoke with locomotives, it is my childhood. You can look them any time ?

  • @809380

Thanks a lot! I love steam engines not least because of that white smoke! Shame France doesn't have so much preserved steam. IMO Andre Chapelon was the finest modern steam locomotive designer of them all. His 242A1 reliably and consistently outperformed ALL the electric locos of the period but was scrapped as an embarassment!! He was truly a genius!

  • A beautiful idea finely executed. In fact, it brought me to tears.

  • @PaulHummerman

Thanks Paul. I made the video because I love music & love steam engines. IMO Elgar's Intro & Allegro is a piece of dazzling power & yet tender emotion. The capacity for such juxtapositions was part of his genius. The idea stemmed from Ken Russell's famous film on Elgar watch?v=zSCMEIjwUwk 0.33 ...this vid 11:33

I searched for a shot to match the opening themes & eventually found one that had beauty & yet the hint of a brooding darkness. It all grew from there!

  • @HerbyPumpkin

Interesting comment. See 12:16. Any other ideas on this? Great we both love steam. Made me think. Some rough calcs. Driving wheels diameter 6' 8". Revs per 10 secs at 55+. Simple maths = just under 80mph. Max allowable speed for steam engines in UK currently 75 but allowed occasional 78 & on test 'overspeed' 83. 78 regularly achieved (engines could go much faster - eg Tornado). So IMO at least 78. If someone could GPS it, that would be more accurate. Any GPSers? ...Hᴜɢʜ....ツ

  • @larski63 The train is doing about 35 - 40 mph. All the cars have either stopped or slowed down so they and the passengers can see. Speed limit on a road like that in the UK (single carriageway is 60 mph). We all love a steam train over here in the UK.

  • @larski63

Difficult to know how fast. The best US, German and UK steam engines could reach a max cruising (unforced) speed of about 175 kph on level track - although (especially in the UK) the track condition or signalling heavily inhibited such high speed running.

  • @larski63

Thanks! That big American loco is a Challenger that I wrote about in reply to arungaparkspeedway. Mighty powerful. In this shot, she was pulling a revenue earning freight train for her owners Union Pacific. Impressive.
