  • I've never been to the East Coast, but Seattle seems plenty friendly to me. Maybe because I tend to smile a lot. I have had random people on the sidewalk strike up friendly mini-conversations. And I usually get a friendly smile back when I make eye contact with drivers. And I've never known anyone to get in trouble for jaywalking. =D

  • People from Seattle are friendly. You just have to learn how to approach social groups. Groups that do the same thing (mountain climbing, for example). That way it is like meeting people who *gasp* enjoy doing what you do! And East Coast folks really don't get it here. I pity them.

  • a lot of people disagree with this commercial because theyre thinking it applies to only the city of seattle.. i dont like seattle at all.. when northwesters say seattle we mean in washington. because if i said snohomish, half of you wouldnt know how to pronounce it. if i say marysville you think i meant california. if i say sequim you look at me funny AND cant pronounce it, if i say vancouver you say eh, and if i say twisp you giggle. come to the rest of washington and youll get it.

  • I can't believe people think that Northwest types are smug! It must be that nice people generally get offended by rude people. It can come off as smug I guess.

  • @yasmotryuvas I guess it takes a certain type of person to get these. Moving from there to here it's hard to get the type of people. It's the same way for me. I just moved to Chicago and I don't get why people think people in the Midwest are friendly.

  • When they say 'east coast' they mean the northeast (NY, NJ, CT, MA).

I had business folks come out for 3 weeks from Boston to work with me here.

The first week, they hated it, saying it was creepy how people smiled, talked and used their turn signals.

The second week, they were a lot quieter but they stopped wearing ties.

The third week, two of them started applying for local jobs. One of them actually moved here - went home long enough to quit and pack up his apartment.

    Seattle Sux

  • Seattle is a melting pot. When folks start to realize that, then maybe people can accept the town for what it is: awesome. Awesome only if you chose to make it awesome. Negative attitudes are going to get you diagnosed with S.A.D. and have you posting disgruntled things on youtube videos.

  • @yasmotryuvas Well-put. "Passive aggressive and smug" sums up this area pretty well.

  • See, moving from the border of the Northeast/Midwest, you get blunt and friendly. Here you get... passive aggressive and smug? People aren't overt jerks to each other, but at least back east you know where you stand with people.

  • I LOVE these commercials. My former college professor moved to Seattle from Manhattan, and said that for the first year or two that she was out here, she was freaked out/confused by the fact that grocery store clerks and random strangers would chit chat with her.

  • Its so weird. All of these are so true.
