Arranged and performed by CooolJazzz
Cannonball Stone Series Alto Saxophone (The Raven)
Meyer-5M mouthpiece with Rico Reserve #3 reed. I discovered Rico Reserves about six months ago. A little pricey, but the best saxophone reed Rico has ever made (in my opinion). Much better than the Jazz Selects, and better than the Vandoren ZZ's which I still use on my soprano.

Extra credit points for the first person to identify the tune I'm quoting starting at 2:57

(Apologies again to everyone who left such nice comments on the previous upload of this, but I decided to remix the audio in hopes of bringing out the piano fills a little better)

  • Duuuuuude, I have a raven as well. Great sax, and plays well. Very Nice :D

  • cool :)

  • could you show us some of your originals?

  • Shame you didn't leave the prevous version up. It would have been nice compare the two to see how it's evolving.

  • Wow. This man 'rocks'.

    Nice work. First class.

  • Nicely done.

  • I was in no way calling you a copyist:-) just a very happy coincidence. You are right, it is the very slow and narrow vibrato (mine too) that does it, it is a very lyrical and yet sinewy sound. You have great depth of tone too, and great air support. That is long tones for you!

  • I just listened to "Our Song" and a few others, and I have to admit I do hear some similarities now. It's the first time I've actually made that connection. Just never really thought about it before. Of course, I'll never hold a candle to him as a player, but the similarity in sound does seem to be there. I think part of it may also be that we use a similar style of vibrato which plays a huge role in a person's overall sound, but it's all purely accidental, I swear!

    Thanks again :-)

  • In fact CJ, take a listen to "our song" by Art on here. The similarity in your tone is striking! I am green with envy :-)

  • Same with me a Desmond :-) Never gave him any attention until people flattering said I sounded a little like him. I now appreciate his talent. I think you sound a lot like Art, especially his later stuff (Winter Moon album) That is high praise because I think Art has the finest tone of all, round and mellow with just the right amount of edge. Desmond on steroids if you like :-)
