I decided to see if I could make music out of scratched CDs, similar to the work of Oval and Yasunao Tone.
I used four very badly damaged CDs and sampled all the interesting sounds they made that didn't feature in the original recordings and then arranged my track with some free software.
The accompanying video was inspired by Moiré Patterns. The opening segment of the film is four sets of lines gently seesawing against each other.

  • Nice work. I've tried doing this several times but I always just get unreadable discs too. I tried using scotch tape like Tone, scratching them, etc etc etc and nothing. Oh well. Maybe one day I'll come across a accommodating CD player!

  • @littlegreenjason Modern CD players have an error-correction function, which means heavily damaged discs register as unreadable. I use a 17 year old mini hi-fi system, but I have managed to get a PC running XP to rip scratched discs. My advice make a couple of small marks with a felt tip pen first. See if that works and then add more marks.

  • you should put this to download man;D

  • @colourr19 What the track or the video? Anyway thanks for the comment.

  • How did you make this animation? I really like it.

  • @pinklikethepanther I'm glad you liked the video. I had two jpeg pictures of white horizontal bars on black backgrounds. I then superimposed one image over the other and then used the video effects packaged with trakAxPC to give the illusion of movement.

  • @DevasionRecords Don't worry about what people label you as. Make music that moves you.
