Although mariachi has thrived in the United States for decades, most Americans grossly misunderstand this classic genre of Mexican folk music. Even as mariachi flourishes among the Mexican-American populations of California, Texas and Arizona, many gringos erroneously conflate mariachi with any and all forms of guitar-dominant Mexican country song. In fact, the term "mariachi" denotes a unique type of instrumentation, dress, and musical heritage, as we discover in this video that seeks to identify the locus of contemporary mariachi in the San Francisco Bay Area. Compiled from research, expert interviews, and musical recordings, this short film aims to upend modern misconceptions about mariachi and offer music lovers an abridged introduction to this wonderful art.
