It visualize what's done. I don't would say it's useless..

By moving the icons, it reinforces for the user that they are still in the same folder, and more clearly shows what effect a view change had on icon organization.
If "user" means "command line is teh pwnsauz", maybe it's not so useful. If "user" means "jimmy, come show grandma how to print a youtube", then it's certainly useful.
