The term "three dog night" comes from an old saying about the weather. It was so cold it was a three dog night. It took three dogs sleeping in your bunk to keep you warm. The saying goes back over a hundred years. Now, whether or not the band got its name from that saying, I don't know.

They really made this song into a party. It was always great to turn up the volume on the car radio when this came on in the hot sumer of 1970. Also only the second Randy Newman song I'd ever heard back then.
