Update: Since there seems to be a lot of confusion and criticism of my description of how the side mirrors should be adjusted, here are a few links that provide a better explanation and tutorial of how one's mirrors should be properly angled.

I don't think I am the only one when I say, I am sick and tired of traffic on the freeway. As a community we can improve traffic congestion by doing a few simple things while we drive to our destination.

1) Your side mirrors are for your blind spots and not for looking behind you. This will also help you merge safely instead of accidentally merging into another car. If you can't see them in your side window or rear mirror you should be able to see them in your side mirror. Also this will help you spot motorcycles.

2) Please leave a gap for merging traffic. Metering lights only help if traffic already on the highway leaves room for the cars that have been pre-gaped to merge. Don't tailgate please! Leave plenty of cushion room for merging traffic getting on and off the highway. Save yourself the time, money, and headache of repairing your front and rear bumper.

3) Drive right, Pass left. Please be considerate of other drivers.

If only people could merge like this all the time. Imagine driving during rush hour with no traffic. I hope one day there will be no traffic during peak hours. There are no stop signs or red lights on the highway, and yet we ride our brakes and drive no faster than 10mph during rush hour traffic. Please help the community reduce traffic and leave more space between cars!

  • sometimes the lane that you merge from (the ramp) sort of has its own lane...like you just continue onto traffic....that is simpler i think...but like in your video the lane you merge from ends....what do you do if there is a lot of traffic in the rightmost lane you are trying to merge to and there are no gaps to merge into? and your lane is ending?

  • @sudheshnam - Every situation is unique so use your best judgment since you're the driver, not me. It would probably be safer to take the next exit. Sometimes people just won't let you in. =( If you know a particular exit always has traffic during rush hour, you can just take an earlier/later exit (maybe one which has less congestion) and take the city streets to your destination.

  • Updated the Description with helpful links that give a better explanation, live examples, and diagrams.

  • Who taught you to drive? Your mirrors ARE to see what's behind you!

Turn your fuckin' head and take a quick look over your shoulder to make sure nothing is in your 'blind spot'- only takes a quick glance...

So you go slow, cut someone off, then you go and flash your hazard lights?

    Gee that wouldn't be confusing!?!?

You said: "You should not be cruising at the speed limit in the far left lane. "

    WTF?

So your a slow retards who doesn't look, and causes a ton of near misses.

    You dipshit!

  • @DarkLightning909 - If you find my explanation confusing please refer to this web site for a better description of what I am trying to describe: linquist.net/motorsports/tech/mirrors/

  • WOW - your mirrors are NOT to see behind you? Well, then if you can't look to see whats coming up in the lane next to you that you want to merge into, you just might move over in front of another vehicle that is going 10 or 15 miles an hour faster & cause them to swerve or slam on their brakes & then there is a chain reaction accident because mirrors are NOT to see behind you.

Now, there is some REAL intelligence!!

  • @kctrknman - Every car has a "Blind Spot" your side mirrors are for this. There is a section of the car that one is not able to see from one's rear mirror nor side window, the side mirrors should be able to see this field of vision. Here is a link that better explains what I mean: wikihow.com/images/5/50/Rearviewfields-2.jpg. Sorry for not describing and clarifying better, thanks for bringing it to my attention.
