I remember my first 'name' for this movie - 'genius' - nothing less, nothing more. Its visual and intellectual impact is overpowering and I think it's really worth to rethink it again and again, even now - over 20 years from its birth.

I think that filming Japanese people right in their faces(which, IMHO is far from what makes the film brilliant) is a lot less pretentious than deciding what is art in the name of the whole planet Earth. How can you be so certain that however incomprehensible or even dull a work of art may seem, it will never inspire anyone, that it will never engender any further creation?

Sorry to say this, but this was a kinda stupid film. I enjoyed it, but there was so much bullshit. seriously, who goes to Japan and film Japanese people RIGHT IN THEIR FACES, then get some white hoe to drone on and on in the background. It is definitely not art. I suppose those who think it is amazing must love "my bed" by tracey emin. I haven't seen something so pretentious since Fata Morgana by Herzog.

Every time I see the word "pretentious" I can't help but think "what exactly are they pretending to do? Make a film about a certain subject? How are they not already doing that?" Sure, a film might offer only superficial commentary. But ...that would make it a superficial film. Which is a valid opinion, don’t get me wrong; you might think this movie doesn’t delve deep enough into what it wants to. But calling it “pretentious” doesn’t really explain why you’re disappointed in the end result.
