Rooftop protest at Our Lady of the Assumption in Bilsland Drive, Ruchill

Mothers camping out on the rooftops at Our Lady of Assumption (OLA) in Bilsland Drive on 20th April 2009: Known as Our Lady of Assumption, the latest school in the G20 postcode threatened with closure is being occupied by parents of pupils affected by the proposals. After the two schools in the Wyndford area of Maryhill, Wyndford and St Gregory's primaries were recently occupied for 15 days in an effort to save them, now some parents of Our Lady of the Assumption primary school children in Ruchill's Bilsland Drive in north Maryhill G20 have taken to occupying the roof of O.L.A.

They will camp out on the windy rooftop until the council's final meeting to decide on the proposed school closures on Thursday 23rd April 2009 at 12 noon in Glasgow's George Square. On this date there will be a mass blockade of the council City Chambers organised by the Glasgow-wide Save Our Schools Campaign. Until then the brave women will remain camping out in all weathers. The occupation began in the small hours of the morning, and in the afternoon and early evening they fortunately had sunny weather but the following morning the sky is heavy with rain clouds and there was a downpour just before writing this and it looks as though the rain is going to last a long time. When I last visited them in the early evening they just had two small tents. After the occupation began the education authorities decided to close the school to staff and pupils despite the fact that the occupiers were not inside the building or remotely near anyone who could enter or leave the building, nor were they in the least noisy. Just as the Wyndford and St Gregory's parents chose the Easter holidays for their occupation to avoid disruption to the children's education, so the parents of OLA pupils have avoided actually entering the school building to likewise prevent disruption to the kids' lessons. There was no reason for the authorities to close the building other than to cause resentment towards the protesters from other parents in a cynical attempt to divide and rule and deter other parents from joining the cause to save the school.

Closing Our Lady of the Assumption means forcing very young children to travel to far-away schools which is unsafe, costly, will force them to form larger classes which have proven to be less productive for pupils' learning, and will destroy the heart of their community, not to mention it will prove frightening and traumatic for many 5-year-olds, unused to large classes, in a school so faraway.

The rooftop campaigners speak of their discontent in this video and their resolve to fight on to save all 25 schools threatened with closure in Glasgow, whether or not their own school is saved.

This is a great video! It's such a shame that the efforts and bravery of these women didn't bring about the saving of the school. Sadly, the demolition of the school went ahead and we all know who to blame for that!

These women will be remembered unlike the scum at the City Council.

Thanks, Neil. The protestors are very brave to sleep on a roof in all weathers and risk arrest to publicize their cause. The parents arent giving up now, either, even though the council have voted to close the schools. The public will be seeing more of their activities for some time to come. The next elections arent far away and people have long memories.
