In April 2006, a Yamaha CS5 monosynth, having been owned by Richard D James (Aphex Twin), with the actual liner notes for his landmark "Selected Ambient Works Volume II" etched into the bottom, was sold at VEMIA auction for approximately $1200 - a bargain in retrospect. The winning bidder was, in fact, a friend of Solvent's, and the synth resides not in a display case, but in Solvent's studio, on generous long-term loan.
"RDJCS5", a new 4-track 12-inch / digital EP by Solvent, is the result. Each and every sound on this record came from RDJ's old CS5, painstakingly programmed and multi-tracked by Solvent over the course of several months. The limited capabilities and sound palette of this humble little synth provided quite a challenge, but ultimately the results are not merely an exercise in technical synthnerdery; "RDJCS5" speaks more of Solvent's musical kinship to thee Analord.
The 12" vinyl edition is limited to 300 copies, in brown chipboard sleeve with sticker, and also contains an additional noise/drone piece at the end of side B. Entitled "Sandpaper", this cut will be individually hand-etched by Solvent, for a 1-of-a-kind cut/click/loop experience.
Living on the fame of... pretty ok track though. Why name the tracks after the unofficial SAW2 names btw?

@Phylopn I've been releasing music for nearly 15 years & I'm currently signed to one of the most respected electronica labels in the world (Ghostly) - So no need for me to live on anyone else's fame. It's not like this track/EP is bringing me any kind of additional fame or fortune so not sure what your point it. My point with this release is to pay homage to one of my favorite artists. "Why name the names..."? Answer is here: exclaim [dot] ca/Reviews/DanceAndElectronic/solvent-rdjcs5-ep

@s0LVentCIty Don't take it too seriously mate, just kidding on the fame bit. However, if it wasn't for this I wouldn´t have ever heard your music, and I guess I´m not the only one in that, so it does work. I see where you're getting at with the titles, a bit tongue in cheek I guess. Anyway, I liked the track (and vid), sounds very MFM/ SAW85-92 like, but that's no suprise. Just curious because I'm too much of a fanboy: did you manage to exactly recreate any sounds that Richard did? Thanks.

@Phylopn Not sure if a lot of AFX fans have come across my music on account of this project, but cool if some do. If you check the view counts on my other videos, you can see that these AFX-synth videos are not getting more views than my others. I never tried to replicate any specific AFX sounds on this synth. Who's to say on what track(s) he ever used it on, or if he even ever used it on any tracks at all. Chances are that he probably did use it on some recordings, but no way to know for sure.
