Yeah it's the same around here. I think the guy who said he saw soldiers looking shamed was trying to start something. I carry a purse made of my husbands old uniform and am always asked about it. When I say I am the wife of a United States soldier I am thanked and sometimes hugged. We are treated with gratitude and respect.

Funny, when my boyfriend came to town during 4th of July, he told me he wasn't going to wear his uniform like I wanted him to because he'd never get any moment to himself. People would have been thanking him for what he does and patting him on the back. Of course I too, live in the Midwest. Maybe it's just that mentality.

Let's please distinguish between the politicians who initiated these conflicts (in the case of Iraq, on shaky evidence and questionable reasoning) and the soldiers who get sent into harms way.
