The crowd "smothering Geoff" is what is supposed to happen when you're playing such intense music. It's better to be able to sing scream the words back right into his face, or grab him and sing with him. I'm sure the last thing on his mind during this song is him trying to perfect his singing. If it was, then I'd say he's doing it wrong.
