Blakfish - Jeremy Kyle is a Marked Man live at their last ever gig, The Flapper 19-03-10. (Jack and Maud from The JCQ on vox and guitar)
--------
At their height, Blakfish were one of the most important bands in the underground rock scene and were loved by an army of dedicated fans dotted around the UK, Europe and even around the world. Their hefty list of achievements span a ten year period so I won't list them all; but I will say that if you don't own a copy of their first and last full length release 'Champions' (Hassle, 2009), then you are missing out.
In that respect though, it's not too late because you can still get a copy. However, if you've never seen them live I'm afraid that you most definitely have missed out. Although this video will allow you to see a Blakfish gig (if not THE Blakfish gig), it just cant do justice to the unique feeling that comes with a sell-out crowd singing every word at the top of their voice whilst hurling themselves forward, desperate to be at the front for the last gig of the most important band to come out of the Midlands since...well, ever.
Known for the raucous performances and unbridled enthusiasm, Blakfish played hundreds upon hundreds of gigs over the past decade, each one meeting and frequently surpassing their own very high standards. The chances are if you can think of a gig venue in the UK, they played it. They also played a load that you dont know about and a fair few in mainland Europe too.
Such an astonishing work ethic deserves a strong fan base and that is exactly what Blakfish has. When it was announced that there would be a farewell gig the tickets sold out in a couple of hours. The show was Blakfish and Friends and featured members of Soni~Quella, Shoes and Socks Off, The JCQ and Shapes filling in for absent vocalist/guitarist Sam Manville. Also featured as support acts were the latter two bands and Conquistadors.
This video captures the chaos and passion of their final gig at Birmingham's The Flapper and culminates in a display of affection and affinity that most bands could only dream of.
