I wrote the song "Cannery Row" in 1995. The reason for the song has it's roots in a visit to Monterey's Cannery Row in 1965. Back then there was nothing but the old canneries left to the ages. Today that has all changed and Cannery Row is not the same anymore. I still get great joy out of reading the book and going back in time however.
As a tone poem I wanted to bring a feel to Monterey's history with Mexico and of Old California. I wrote the melody for Trumpet and the solo for Melodeon. The sound brings back a feel of the old days. When I hear the melody I see see cars & trucks driving by the canneries. I see Doc Rickett's leaving his lab to grab a beer before sunset. I hear laughing in a bar and see a beautiful girl in a bright dress walk by.
I enjoyed playing my Trumpet again on this song. My mom and dad bought me my first horn when I was eight. It was used and beat up real bad, but it lead me on to many other musical roads.
The song Cannery Row is on the bands 19th CD Album release. If you are interested go to CD Baby's web-site and put in Black Irish Band, and then California Story. The album features three songs with America's No#1 Cowboy singer, Michael Martin Murphey also. Or www.blackirish.com
Hope you enjoy this look into the past!- Patrick Michael
Thank you for this memory of Ed Ricketts, one of the most beautiful creatures to inhabit this earth.
